Your situation
Does this sound like what happened?
These are some of the circumstances we can consider. You can still ask for an assessment if your experience is different.
- The responsible driver had no valid insurance
- The vehicle or driver was stolen or using false details
- A driver left the scene and cannot be identified
- The vehicle was identified but the driver cannot be traced
What we will talk through
We will ask what is known about the vehicle and driver, whether the police were notified and what evidence or insurance correspondence you have.
You can approach the MIB directly
You may submit an MIB claim yourself or appoint a solicitor. We will explain potential charges before you decide whether to instruct us.
Scheme rules apply
MIB compensation is not automatic. Responsibility, evidence, exclusions and the applicable agreement will all need to be considered.
Injuries & losses
The effect on your everyday life matters.
Tell us about your symptoms, recovery and the practical changes since the accident. Depending on the evidence and legal route, a claim may consider the injury alongside related losses such as:
- The physical or psychological injury caused by the incident
- Lost earnings and reasonable related expenses
- Property damage where the relevant scheme permits it
- Treatment and care needs supported by evidence
These are possible categories, not guaranteed payments. The evidence, responsibility and applicable rules determine what can be recovered.
Useful evidence
Start with what you have.
You do not need a complete file before speaking to us. Keep original documents and recordings where possible. The following can help:
- 01
A police report and incident reference
- 02
Vehicle descriptions, partial registrations and witness details
- 03
Photographs, CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage
- 04
Insurance correspondence and medical information
Keep the details in one place.
Use the practical accident checklist to organise what you have and note what is missing.

The team can consider the information, the possible route and what further enquiries may be needed.
Decide whether to proceed
If the firm can act, review the proposed next steps and funding terms before giving instructions.
The costs conversation
No Win, No Fee
May be available, subject to eligibility and terms. Ask about any potential costs, deductions and relevant insurance before choosing to proceed.
Understand the funding termsCommon questions
A little clarity before you decide.
Do I have to pay a solicitor to approach the MIB?
No. You can make your own claim to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau. You may also choose independent legal representation. If you ask us to act, we will explain the proposed funding and any potential charges before you decide.
I only have part of the registration. Is that useful?
Yes. Keep it along with the vehicle’s colour, make, direction of travel and any distinguishing features. Witness details and footage can also help. An incomplete registration does not, by itself, rule out an assessment.
Are uninsured and untraced driver claims handled the same way?
No. Different agreements and routes can apply. The information known about the driver, the injuries and any property damage help determine where the claim should go. MIB eligibility and compensation are subject to the relevant rules.
Ask about the deadline early
For many personal injury claims, court proceedings must usually be started within three years, but the correct deadline depends on the facts and exceptions can apply. Contacting us does not stop time running. Seek advice promptly rather than relying on a general deadline.
